The Genetics & Genomics Academy (GGA) leverages collaborations across research and training at NC State University to enhance our understanding of the genetic and genomic underpinnings of life on earth, to sustain biodiversity, and enhance society. The GGA serves as a hub connecting more than 200 faculty who engage in genetics- and genomics-centered research or who use related tools in their research and training programs. Faculty within the GGA consider basic and applied questions, with a recognition of the land-grant mission to bring genetics and genomics and its value to the people of the state, whether that is in the context of engagement, novel applications, comparative evolutionary approaches (and their applied benefits) or policy. The GGA also maintains a close partnership with the Genetic Engineering and Society Center (GES) at NC State. This partnership facilitates close connections between the GGA and social scientists and humanities scholars on campus.

The GGA is committed to:

  • growing interdisciplinary research that includes genetics and genomics by assisting faculty in novel collaborations in partnership with other academies and OUIP units
  • enhancing all interdisciplinary graduate training through the GGA’s flagship Genetics and Genomics Scholars Program as well as through partnerships with other training programs
  • providing undergraduates across disciplines with opportunities to better understand genetics and genomics, and their societal impacts, in the service of students’ career goals
  • assisting efforts to engage the public and stakeholders in the science of genetics and genomics and their impacts through outreach & engagement.
